Chios Tangerine, an explosion of taste and aroma
Coming from Asia, the tangerine (Citrus reticulata) is the sweetest of all citrus fruits. Smaller in size and with a thinner peel we enjoy it quite a bit in our country. Its essential oil is mild, sweet, and relaxing. It consists of d-limonene, g-terpene, α- and 2-pinene, and myrlene and is beneficial to our health in multiple ways.
The “Mandarin of Chios”
It is the fruit of the tree Citrus Deliciose Tenore, more specifically of the variety “Common Chiotiko”. This variety has a Mediterranean origin, studied by the French researcher H. Chapot, (see Annex 2 La mandarine “COMMUNE”, Al Awania [Rabat] 5: 29-51, 1962). It is famous for its strongly characteristic aroma, its special taste, the size of the fruits, and their rich juice content.
The European Commission, recognizing its distinctive value as of fresh fruit, the product of interaction of soil, climatic and anthropogenic factors, as well as its identification with the island of Chios, recognized it in December 2012 as “Product of Geographical Origin – P.G.I. under the name “Mandarini Chios” and is included in the list of the 37 most famous agricultural products of the country. The trade of mandarin brought significant prosperity to the island of Chios. Chios is known for centuries for its unique products (mastiha and citrus), while the people of Chios, proud of their island and products, treat them with respect, as elements of their local culture.
The difference between the Chiotiko mandarin and the Clementine variety and other widely marketed varieties is the intense aroma and the strong taste. The profile of the essential oil from “Mandarini Chios”, based on analyses carried out on samples taken during the growing seasons 2005 – 2006 and 2006 – 2007, comprises of the following ingredients: a-Thujene, α-Pinene, Camphene, b-Pinene, b-Myrcene and o-Methylanisol, p-Cymene, Linalol kai b-Caryophyllene. All these substances are volatile and contribute to the characteristic aroma of Chios mandarin. The cultivation of the mandarin tree finds the best conditions in Chios, the island with the largest number of days without clouds throughout Greece.
The reputation of the product “Mandarini Chios” was widely spread in Greece and abroad thanks to the special characteristics of the product combined with the intense commercial activity of the residents of Chios with exports to several markets including Odessa, Izmir, Istanbul, Trieste etc.
The cultivation of mandarin in Chios is considered by many to have been introduced by the Genoese conquerors (1348-1566). However, there are no historical testimonies. On the contrary, there are oral testimonies of Mr. G. Horemis that the first mandarin trees came to the island by his grandfather Giannis K. Horemis after the frost in Chios in 1850, as a more frost-resistant citrus species. They were originally cultivated on his estate and from there, their cultivation was extended throughout Kampos by grafting on nerantzia (Citrus aurantium) substrate. The travelers in Chios stated that “so intense is the aroma that overflows from the orchards with tangerine” that Chios has become known inside and outside Greek borders as “”myrovolos Chios” (“the fragrant Chios”).
